Our Board
The board of SVA governs our overall direction and purpose. The board brings a diverse range of business, financial, entrepeneurial and philanthropic capabilities to SVA.

Robert McLean
Chairman Social Ventures Australia

Rob has served on the boards of CSR Limited, Pacific Dunlop Limited and GS Private Equity. He is a founder of private equity investors, TiNSHED and WM Capital and was previously Managing Director of McKinsey & Co for Australian and New Zealand.

Rob is also President of the private conservation group, Australian Landscape Trust. He serves on the Business Advisory Council of the Centenary of Federation and is a Director of the Centre for Independent Studies.


Arsenio Alegre
CEO WorkVentures Ltd

Arsenio was appointed CEO of WorkVentures Ltd in October 2007, having joined as CFO in October 2004. Prior to moving into the not-for-profit sector, he had significant international experience in financial and business management having worked throughout Asia and Europe as a Senior Finance Executive for American Express. While in the UK, Arsenio had extensive involvement with the Prince’s Trust.

He is a Certified Practising Accountant and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business and an MBA. 


Alison Deans
MA, MBA

Alison is an Executive Director at netus, an early-stage technology investment company. Prior to netus she served as CEO of Hoyts Cinemas, ecorp and eBay Australia. While at ecorp she served as chairman of ninemsn, eBay Australia and Ticketek and as a director of the other consumer technology businesses in the portfolio.

Alison is also a director of The Starlight Children’s Foundation. In 2001 she was named as one of 30 Australian Financial Review's BOSS Magazine's True Leaders and received a Centenary Medal for outstanding service to business leadership.

Elaine Henry OAM BSc (Hons)
CEO The Smith Family

Elaine has served on many committees at State, national and international levels, and currently Chairs the Commonwealth's Stronger Families & Communities Partnership and is a Member of the Welfare Reform Consultative Forum.

From 1998-2001, she was a non-executive Director of AXA Trustees. In February 2000 Elaine was selected as one of 50 Australian women to be profiled in the 200 Businesswomen's Hall of Fame. The following year she was named as one of 30 Australian Financial Review's BOSS Magazine's True Leaders.



Carol Schwartz AM
BA, LLB, MBA

Carol is Chairman of Industry Superannuation Property Trust (ISPT); Chairman of Our Community; President of Melbourne International Arts Festival; Chair of Future Melbourne Reference Group; Executive in Residence at Melbourne Business School as well as a director on a number of other leading boards.

Carol was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honors list in 2006 for her achievements in business and commerce and her contribution to community and the arts. She also received the Centenary Medal in 2001 in recognition of her outstanding service as a leading business executive and board participant.


Richard Spencer
CEO The Benevolent Society

Richard has been CEO of The Benevolent Society since 2004. Prior to that appointment, he spent many years working at CEO level in the not-for-profit sector, including stints as CEO of The Spastic Centre and as New York President and CEO of AFS Intercultural Programs.

Richard also served as Executive Director for Unicef in the late 1980s. Before that he worked as a corporate lawyer at Clayton Utz and held senior management positions with Rio Tinto and Pioneer International.
 


Michael Traill
Chief Executive Social Ventures Australia

Michael joined SVA as founding CEO in 2002 after 15 years as a co-founder and Executive Director of Macquarie Bank's venture capital arm, Macquarie Direct Investment.

Michael is a director of the John Maclean Foundation and the Opera Australia Capital Fund, and he serves on the advisory board of Dimension Data Australia and MLC Private Equity. He holds a BA (Hons) from Melbourne University and an MBA from Harvard University.

Michael was a joint winner of the 2005 Equity Trustees Not For Profit CEO Judge's Award, was nominated by the Australian Financial Review's BOSS magazine as one of 25 True Leaders in 2006 and was named Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year (Eastern Region) 2008.
