SVA Mentoring Partners Margaret Flynn, the Director of Centacare Wilcannia-Forbes, faces a complex business issue, one that would pose challenges to any executive.
Centacare Wilcannia-Forbes provides social welfare services to families and children in rural and remote communities of NSW. Because of an increasing trend for the Government to distribute its funds through large non-profit conduits, Centacare Wilcannia-Forbes, which has a budget of $3 million and 36 staff, is approaching a merger with the much smaller Centacare Bathurst.
The merger better aligns Centacare with the Government’s new delivery structure; however, it also raises questions about how best to restructure and govern the merged organisation.
Through SVA’s Community Mentor Program, Margaret was matched with Jonathan Deane, Director, Strategy of AMP, about 18 months ago. They got to know each other and better understand Centacare’s unique challenges by using SVA’s organisational diagnostic tool.
Margaret and Jonathan talk every couple of weeks. They discuss many strategic issues and most recently those surrounding the merger, from establishing a new governance structure to arranging reporting lines for efficient service delivery.
Thanks to Jonathan and AMP, the law firm of Clayton Utz is providing merger and acquisition services to Centacare on a pro bono basis.
Centacare’s merger demonstrates the growing need for business expertise in the social sector. This mentor relationship demonstrates how the corporate and social worlds can come together to benefit the community. Margaret is genuinely interested in Jonathan’s insights and suggestions, and Jonathan is truly engaged and committed to Centacare’s success.
