On October 25 a film we’re all incredibly excited about and proud of at SVA: Catherine Scott’s award-winning documentary “Backtrack Boys” launches nationally.
It’s the true story of BackTrack, a unique youth-centred program helping kids doing it tough.
BackTrack and the program’s inspirational work is well known here at SVA, becoming a venture partner in May 2017.
The results of the BackTrack approach are remarkable. In the last 10 years over 1,000 kids have walked through BackTrack’s doors, and almost 9 in 10 young people in the BackTrack program move into work, education or training. In that same 10 years, the local crime rate has dropped by more than 50%. With $250,000 saved each time a child is kept out of detention, it’s an alternative solution that’s succeeding where other programs have failed.
We’re proud to be contributing to this ground-breaking program by providing funding assistance and community mentoring support. SVA is helping BackTrack prepare to take this unique program Australia-wide. As a result of the success achieved in Armidale, BackTrack is receiving overwhelming demand from communities across Australia wanting their own BackTrack-style programs.
SVA is working with the team at BackTrack to co-design a sustainable and modularised program to allow BackTrack to be expanded to other rural, regional and remote communities. Pilot programs are already underway in Bourke, Dubbo, Condobolin and Lake Cargelligo, and discussions are also taking place with the communities of Orange, Kempsey, Moree, Grafton, Broken Hill and Tamworth.
For a glimpse into the life-changing impact this unique program is having for a group of young people in Australia doing it tough, be sure to catch the film when it hits cinemas nationally on October 25.
